The Second Largest Ringing Bell - Mingun
Mingun bell is stored at Pahtodawgyi pagoda in Mingun, a town in Sagaing Region, located 11 km up the Ayeyarwady River on the west bank from Mandalay, burma. With a short drive out of Mandalay you may reach to the bell and spent some hours to admire the biggest bell of the world till 2000.
The Mingun temple is a monumental uncompleted stupa began by King Bodawpaya in 1790. It was not completed, due to an astrologer claiming that, once the temple was finished, the king would die. The completed stupa would contain been the largest in the world at 150 metres (490 ft). Visiting Pahtodawgyi pagoda you could notice huge cracks which were affected by the earthquake of 23 March 1839
King Bodawpaya also had a gigantic bell cast to go with his huge stupa, the Mingun Bell weighing 90 tons, and was the largest ringing bell in the world till 2000. That is the must seen place when you consider spending some day in Mandalay, burma. The weight of the bell in Burmese measurement, is 55,555 viss or peiktha (1 viss = 1.63 kg), handed down as a mnemonic "Min Hpyu Hman Hman Pyaw", with the consonants representing the number 5 in Burmese astronomy and numerology.
The bell was said to own been cast on the opposite side of the river and was transported by using two boats, which after crossing the river, proceeded up two specially built canals. The canals were then dammed and the bell was lifted by raising the water level by the addition of earth into the blocked canal. In this way the bell was originally suspended.
The Mingun Bell was knocked off its supports as a result of a grand earthquake on 1839. It was resuspended by the Irrawaddy Flotilla Company in March 1896 using screw jacks and levers using funds from public subscription. The party to celebrate was attended by many and an hourly boat was required to take visitors from nearby Mandalay.
Mingun Bell remain the biggest ringing bell over the world with the ellipse one at 116 tons built in China.
